On December 3, 2003, Premier Wen Jiabao held talks with visiting Slovenian Prime Minister Anton Rop.
Wen noted that since the two countries forged diplomatic relationship 11 years ago, high-level exchanges betweenChinaandSloveniahad run continuously, inter-governmental, parliamentary and non-governmental exchanges had been frequent, and each side offered support to the other on the issues of the latter's major concerns. He noted that in the past four years, bilateral trade volume had been increasing on a yearly basis, with the number ten times as many as that of the early days of the establishment of diplomatic relationship, and the momentum of the development of economic and trade cooperation was satisfactory. He also described the exchanges in the cultural and education, science and technology as effective. The Chinese side felt pleased with the current situation of bilateral relations.
Wen said thatChinaandSloveniahad treated each other as equals, respected the social system and developing path chosen by people of each other without interfering in the internal affairs of each other. They also actively carried out substantial cooperation in various fields while sticking to the principles of mutual benefit and reciprocity. All these have become basic principles of reciprocal cooperation between and common development of both countries. Practice has shown that China-Slovenia friendly cooperation was conducive to the economic and social development of both sides, and went along with the interests of both peoples. Wen said that the Chinese side would like to consolidate and develop existing friendly relations of cooperation between the two countries guided by the above-mentioned principles.
Wen pointed out that China-Slovenia relations were of great potentials. While the bilateral relations entering the second decade, to strengthen political mutual trust and expand substantial cooperation would emerge as a common task in front of the two governments. He proposed that mutual understanding and trust be enhanced through high-level mutual visits, inter-governmental, parliamentary, inter-party and non-governmental exchanges, enterprises of both sides be encouraged to expand their cooperation so as to upgrade the scale and level of bilateral economic and trade cooperation, and exchanges and cooperation in cultural and scientific fields between the two countries to add fuel to the future development of bilateral relations.
Wen also briefed on his guests the current domestic political and economic situation ofChina.
Rop totally agreed with Wen's comment on bilateral relations and the proposals. He said that Slovenia-China relations had gone on smoothly, Slovenian government had always attached great importance to the relations withChinaand would remain to observe the One China policy. He considered bilateral trade and economic potentials were still relatively great andSlovenia's business circle took great interest in expanding trade and economic exchanges withChina.Sloveniawill join the European Union at the beginning of next year, which would provide new opportunities and conditions for cooperation between the two countries. Rop noted thatSloveniawould make joint efforts withChinato deliver an all-around development of reciprocal relations of cooperation.
